Case Studies: World Usability Day

Servi-Challenge

A global initiative – World Usability Day (www.worldusabilityday.org) needed to produce marketing collateral and a promotional package to be distributed to 40 countries and 180 cities (over 5000 packages) on a very tight schedule. The challenges included: developing a package that would be simple to pack; not too costly to ship due to the weight; would have an after-life so that participants could “use” it once the day’s events were concluded; would be designed by a distributed worldwide design team; and meet customs regulations and restrictions.

Servi-Solution

World Usability Day Backpack

Servigraphics assessed the needs, and identified a holistic solution -- A simple, lightweight imprinted backpack filled with marketing materials. These included: a calendar, poster, and World Usability Day Passport with stories and best practices in healthcare (the 2007 World Usability Day theme) and usability by eight innovative organizations. Over 5000 packages were shipped to individual locations supporting event organizers and volunteers worldwide. All of the materials were coordinated to maximize paper and printing costs and usage, meet FSC certification standards, and fit neatly into the backpack for shipment.

Results

The World Usability Day promotional backpacks were a resounding success at all events. They all arrived on time, including in Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Iceland and more. The sponsors were all very pleased with the final products – the calendar, World Usability Day Passport and backpack itself.

The day closed with a worldwide Webcast from Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, WA where Bill Gates provided his support for World Usability Day with a personal video presentation. The products and distribution fully met the needs of World Usability Day and brainstorming for 2008 has already begun.
