"Pressure and Simplicity"
I spent a week at the OnDemand Expo in Boston, March 4th to the 7th. Industry gurus and leaders were everywhere, not to mention all the latest hardware and software enabling the future of marketing communications. "Megatrends to Microtrends" was Charlie Pesko's Keynote Theme. Charlie is CEO of InfoTrends, a global market research company in the marketing communications arena. 'MicroTrends' are taking over in determining the various pathways to success in our future. Web2Print, CrossMedia/multi-channel, campaign management/analytics/ROI, Consumers in control - Choice - personalization, Optimization, fragmentation -- no shortage of Buzzwords here. I came away with 2 key themes surrounding all this -- Pressure and Simplicity. Pressure to change, keep up and stay around; Simplicity as a destination we all seek; to control stress, info overload and keep things balanced and in perspective.
When SIMPLE happens we love it!
-- it's easy, it's intuitive and useable. (like google or Apple) It relieves us from annoyance, clutter and intrusion. It allows us to be High Touch in conjunction with our love of High Tech.
Simplicity = Joy; just think about when anything goes smooth & easy, and that keeps your energy & results positive.
But it's hard to be SIMPLE - complexity is a reality everywhere; it contributes to our daily stresses and it takes a lot of energy to control and harness it. People all over are striving to deliver "Simple". There's a lot of "PRESSURE" on all of us to figure it out, be first and fast, and prove it.
BE RELEVANT - BE EFFECTIVE - BE MEASURABLE --
This is the mantra for todays' marketing professional...but how do we all get them there?
Companies today, and CMO's in particular, are under intense pressure to deliver measureable marketing results. Consumers have unprecedented choice & control. But they too are challenged with complexity pressure as well. "One size no longer fits all". It's the 'MYgeneration' -- MYSpace, MYFavorites, MYCommunities -- MYChoice! Markets and media are more and more fragmented. So how do we deliver on all that?
The average CMO lifespan has grown shorter & shorter (sub 2 years from what I hear). Marketing at many companies could be considered broken and in need of repair. There is no tie in to measurement and metrics. Direct marketing practices are starting to take precedence over Brand based strategies of the past because they deliver measureable results. CMO's need some roadside assistance on the marketing highway and stakeholder patience is not in great supply waiting for the towtruck to arrive.
Triple A to the rescue? The Marketing Services Solution Provider --
Digital media and data bases are driving the marketing process. Microtargeting is the path to the MYGeneration -- the focus is on the individual and understanding personal choice. Then delivering that relevant message, at the right time, in the right medium and being able to track the returns is the key to success.
CMO's need to identify 'end to end' solutions providers. Those firms that not only execute; but integrate and HELP pull it all together, simplify the complexity, and provide the insights for more effective reveue generation and cost savings.
Digital printing driven by intelligent data and integrated with multiple channels & media executions is the new path to effective marketing & improved efficiency. Accurate campaign measurements, analytic capabilities and an ROI based reporting infrastructure are must haves and will define the marketing leaders. Today's marketing services providers must be web centric, multi-media, time sensitive, data driven, and E-enabled with content & workflow management. This is the emerging breed of solutions provider stepping up to support and fulfill the needs of the CMO and marketing organization.
In Conclusion:
The world is going to the web, the internet IS the strategy. It's a cross media, multi-channel world. Personalization is mainstream. Speed to market, automation and campaign management are driving success. Marketer's need End to End Solutions Providers to help them assess, execute and improve.
And with all this complexity is the Power of Simplicity -- systems and approaches that make it all work, with one click.
Simplicity = JOY
P.S. -- don't forget, Going green is good too! It's a triple bottom line out there; People, Environmental, Financial. Keep all 3 on your radar for a sustainable future.

Environmentally certified materials created and delivered to over 180 cites in 40 countries as part of a global initiative
Stoneham, MA December 1, 2007 – Servigraphics, Inc. a leading graphics solutions company with a global focus on environmental sustainability; sourced, coordinated, printed and fulfilled the World Usability Day 2007 marketing program to a record 40 countries and 180 event sites.
Servigraphics started early with planning sessions and interactive meetings with the worldwide design teams to efficiently coordinate and produce a set of materials for event attendees that would be memorable, yet cost-effective and environmentally sensitive.
World Usability Day, an annual event, brings together volunteers from corporations, organizations, and universities in a series of coordinated educational programs and events for professionals and the general public, focused on Usability. In 2007 the theme was healthcare and how it is impacted by design. World Usability Day was founded in 2005, an initiative of the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA), to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use.
Environmental Sustainability and Usability go hand in hand. Many of the principles of Usability are aligned and synergistic with the concepts of Sustainability. Servigraphics was able to optimize print output, achieve FSC certification on the 100% post-consumer waste event materials and construct a kit that was both easy to ship, had a minimal carbon footprint on the environment and would be re-usable by the attendee with a life past the event itself.
According to Caryn Saitz, executive director of World Usability Day , “This year’s theme – Healthcare – and it’s significant connections to usability are not just about making life easier, it’s about saving lives. As we look at what’s happening to our environment and planet, we have to acknowledge that environmental sustainability will have huge impacts on our health & well-being in the immediate future. Ensuring that our materials achieved FSC certification was an important aspect to our global efforts and supported the mission of World Usability Day.”
Servigraphics continues to expand their focus on delivering global graphics solutions to their clients that incorporate “best practices” in Environmental Sustainability making them a leading provider of these services. For more information, visit www.servigraphics.com.
